Dear Mrs. Janette Sadik-Khan,
NYCDOT Commissioner, NACTO President,
In your tenure as the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Commissioner, you have brought American urban transportation policy into the 21st century. Your familiarity with European street design, your willpower to push European-style street treatments through regardless of aversion to change and naysayers, and the success of your treatments have made New York, one of our country’s most advanced cities in regards to street design. The fact that you achieved this at low costs with little more than paint, planters and street furniture serves as a model for transportation departments everywhere.
It must be with great pleasure that you wrought the National Association of City Transportation Officers (NACTO), a collaboration between yourself and like-minded city transportation officers across the country. You also helped produce the Urban Street Design Guide and Urban Bikeway Design Guide, the two most advanced manuals ever produced on street and bikeway design standards in the United States.
