Urban planning can be a trendy profession. Much like architecture, planning trends reflect current theory and practice of the day. Rewind 50 years and the car was king. Slum was razed for high rise. Today the bike has returned. Slum is gentrified.
Yet through these trends a constancy remains. This gem of a video delves into those constancies. The fear of the other, the denial of the poor, the city as engine of culture, the metropolis as a gateway to wealth... the video even touches on the prevalence of fear & misunderstanding towards Islam. More than 50 years ago this video restates what we accept today as common wisdom, that humanity's future resides in the city. The recalcitrant problems of urbanity will continue to exist, but so will the city's beauty and the ability for the city to connect rather than isolate.
